The shocking revelations about sexual offenses against women and children during Women’s Month and the acknowledgment by the minister of finance that he is being investigated by police for sexual assault of a masseuse while on holiday with his wife at the Kruger National Park’s Skukuza camp is deeply concerning
The minister, Enoch Godongwana, denied any wrongdoing, saying that he “in no way or at any time inappropriately touched, sexually harassed or assaulted anyone.”
The latest statistics released by the Police, reveal that violent crime remains at a high level with 9516 cases of rape having been reported.
South Africa has become a war zone for women and children who are raped and murdered daily.
In the last quarter 855 women and 243 children were murdered (Increase of 53.2% and 46.4%, respectively), 11734 cases of assault with grievous bodily harm were reported against women, and 1 670 cases against children (Increase of 54.7% and 58.4%, respectively).
There were 282 reported cases of attempted murder against women and 61 cases against children (Increase of 31.4% and 27.5%, respectively
These figures, presented in the middle of Women’s Month, are a painful reminder of the war being waged by violent criminals against women and children.
One of the most depressing realities is that there is such slow progress in dealing with the DNA case exhibit backlog at the national forensic science laboratories nearly three years after the backlog was exposed in parliament. The lack of progress underlines the lack of political will that exist in dealing with sexual assaults on women and gender-based violence in general.
In the case of the minister of finance, the one real fear is that the NPA won’t proceed with the case against Godongwana for an apparent lack of evidence of wrongdoing.
It is the duty of civil society, and of every NGO that are fighting to eradicate gender-based violence, to pressurize the NPA into investigating this matter.
At 1000 Women Trust, we focus on fundraising and creating awareness for domestic and gender-based violence and abuse.
We believe that if women have access to knowledge, skills, and resources, they will find their own solutions to combat violence against women and girls. We are committed to ending GBV and femicide in our society by empowering, inspiring, educating, and equipping women and girls through various projects, grants, training initiatives.
We are also actively lobbying for greater protection, economic empowerment, compensation, and homes for women and girls affected by GBV through various campaigns.
