1000 Women Trust, one of the leading NGO’s in South Africa at the forefront of the fight against gender-based violence, has stepped up its campaign to eradicate bullying at South African schools by training hundreds of the 4050 teachers and parents who have completed the anti-bullying course the past 18 months – including visually impaired persons – to become anti-bullying facilitators at schools in the Western Cape and Northern Cape.
Of the 240 people trained to become anti-bullying facilitators, 52 are visually impaired.
Tina Thiart, director of 1000 Women Trust, said according to statistics, a staggering 57 % of children in South African Schools are bullied, with 52 % saying they were teased and insulted. A further 26 % were physically abused by being pushed hit or beaten and 16 % were cyberbullied via their phone, e-mail or social network platforms.
“Since the inception of our anti-bullying campaigns in 2018, we have compiled an anti-bullying toolkit to be used by schools and parents. We started off in the Western Cape, but also branched out to the Northern Cape, Limpopo and wherever schools have approached us,” said Thiart.
“In 2021, 2540 parents and teachers completed our anti-bullying course and in the first eight months of 2022, 2000 were put through their paces.
“But we are stepping up the anti-bullying campaign by training people who have done the course as anti-bullying facilitators. We are training 240 people, who are now given the necessary skills to train children at schools to become anti-bullying Champions.
“We are delighted to include visually impaired persons, as we want to be inclusive. The country has 1.4 million people who are visually impaired and blind, and possibly almost five million who suffer from low vision impairment. We want to serve and assist every sector of our population to step up the fight against the scourge of bullying and gender-based violence,” said Thiart.
“Currently, we have 154 people on the anti-bullying training course in the West Coast and in Northern Cape with 35 youths in Springbok working towards Bully Free zones at schools,” Thiart said.
Thiart warned that cyberbullying is rife in SA schools.
According to a recent survey, more than three children out of 10 have been cyerstalked or been a victim of online shaming or revenge porn.
In November 2018, according to the Global Advisor Cyberbullying Study, which surveyed 20 793 parents from 28 countries, South Africa had the highest incidence of cyberbullying in the world, with 54 % of South African parents knowing of a children in their community that experienced cyberbullying.
Thiart said in a trauma-informed school, the best deterrent to bullying and cyberbullying is to create a culture of acceptance and communication.
Such a culture empowers learners to find positive ways to resolve conflicts and has an administration, teachers and other staff who can support learners in making constructive decisions and respond proactively when the aggression of any kind exists on the school campus.
An important first step to take for schools, is to establish an anti-bullying and a zero-tolerance policy at schools, said Thiart. “In addition we need to create awareness of cyberBullying as young people do not understand how cyberbullying and using your phone can be harmful to people. It is also a crime,” warned Thiart.
