Bullying, how it is interlinked with gender-based violence and how it adversely impacts the mental health of learners across South Africa, was at the center of a discussion on Saturday 17 th September as Tina Thiart, director and trustee of 1000 Women Trust, addressed members of 20 clubs of the service organization Rotary.
The informative session was held at the headquarters of Cape Town Society for the Blind in Salt River and apart from the live audience, Rotary-members from Knysna, George, Keetmanshoop and Greece were also linked through zoom.
The meeting was chaired by Ann Wrigth, district governor elect of Rotary 9350. Rotary 9350 has made the theme of empowering women and girls the focal point of a campaign in 2022 and 2023.
1000 Women Trust’s anti-bullying course and anti-bullying toolkit have assisted thousands of teachers and parents across South Africa since 2019. In 2021, 1000 Women Trust trained 2000 teachers and parents, while 2540 people have benefited from the course in the first eight months of 2022.
Thiart asked the audience to share what the greatest challenges were that teenagers in South Africa faced in 2022, and many members spoke about gender-based violence, mental health challenges, financial burdens, teenage pregnancies and bullying as the most pressing concerns for the teens.
Thiart highlighted the mental health challenges that many teens face in the Western Cape. She said a recent poll showed that 16 learners in Mitchells Plain schools commit suicide daily, which is an enormous crisis.
She said these alarming statistics can be partially attributed to forms of gender-based violence as well as bullying in schools.
There are several forms of bullying, like social bullying, verbal bullying, physical bullying, cyberbullying, sexual bullying and racist bullying.
Gender-based violence has been called the second pandemic in South Africa and 10 818 people were raped in the first quarter of 2022, while femicide increased by 70.5 % in that quarter.
Thiart said it is of vital importance that people understand the dynamics of bullying. Not only does it cause enormous mental health problems, but it is also the breeding ground of gender-based violence.
A total of 90 % of bullies at schools become the perpetrators of gender-based violence after school
Bullying in South Africa is also rife, as 51 % of the 2.2 million children in South African schools have been bullied or are going to be bullied during their 12 years at school.
Thiart warned that many of the crimes of gender-based violence and bullying is often under reported. Recently, a polled done amongst more than 650 women showed that 81 % of them who suffered at the hands of perpetrators of gender-based violence, said that they did not want the crime to be reported, but preferred somebody to be a listener as they share their stories about gender-based violence in a safe space with a supportive and empathetic person.
The 1000 Women Trust is a women’s organization that aims to raise awareness around gender-based violence, rape and abuse and mobilize resources. These resources make it possible for the Trust to assist women-led organizations with grants and skills development.
