CAPE TOWN. – Few women provide such a vivid illustration of the comprehensive value of the 1000 Women Restart campaign as Matilda Fakazi.
1000 Women Restart was launched in July 2021 by 1000 Women Trust to empower not only survivors of gender-based violence, but also those who lost their jobs during the COVID lockdown, and provides resources, skills, business mentorships, and hope to many South African women.
Exposing women to an idea bank and to income-generating ideas or skills for better jobs, are part of the charm of 1000 Women Restart.
Fakazi is the owner of Tilly’s Bliss, a shopping, catering, and events management business in Masiphumelele.
She invests 16 % of the profits of her business into the Visionary Can Ladies Community NGO and runs a soup kitchen in Masiphumelele where she feeds between 80 and 120 people twice a day for five days a week. Through sharing income-generating ideas with women she is also able to inspire more people to put bread on the table every day.
Her buying and selling business .buys online from shops in Durban, Gauteng, and overseas and sell in bulk. Her catering business and events- and wedding planner business offers her an opportunity to sell her considerable skills to people interested in weddings, functions, family dinners, and parties.
“It all started many years ago when I was 22 years old and has continued to this day,” Fakazi says.
“The 1000 Women Restart Network impacted me profoundly because my business was not registered prior to when the Restart was launched.
“Not only was my business registered, but I also received support on how to run my business. Other things were also addressed, like compliance, guiding, and mentoring. Through the Network, I had access to good business leadership.
“Tina (Thiart, trustee of 1000 Women Trust) has been my mentor and instrumental in guiding me as my business grew from a small one into a thriving one.
“When I was very young, I was the eldest of our siblings and I had to help put food on the table, even while I was training to become a teacher.
“I had to cover study expenses and help at home. Was there pressure? I didn’t ever experience that much pressure, because I always was motivated to help people and to be useful to others. I did not feel pressure,” Fakazi said. “I love what I do.
“A thing about business is that it keeps on changing every week. It is thrilling. I enjoy every day.
“Tina has given me the best advice. She was constantly supportive and gave me guidance and access to resources, while also sharing her expertise on financial management. I kept personal and business finances separate.
“I also realized how to diversify and understand the needs of customers.
“One way of diversifying was to include homemade meals in my portfolio while waiting for the big contracts,” she says.
